How Necessary Are Tooth Extractions?

Many factors can lead to the necessity of a tooth extraction. These factors encompass (but are not restricted to):
  • Extracting primary teeth that struggle to shed naturally.
  • Removing teeth to facilitate orthodontic treatment.
  • Addressing teeth that cause pain or infection.
  • Extracting a tooth that has fractured.

However, remember that tooth extraction might not be the only viable solution. If you’re grappling with toothache, we might still be able to offer rapid relief while endeavouring to preserve your tooth. Yet, timely identification of the issue is paramount.

Do not hesitate to inform us if you’re encountering any of the subsequent symptoms:
  • Severe tooth pain.
  • Discomfort exacerbated by pressure or chewing.
  • Jaw pain or stiffness.
  • Gum swelling around a tooth or multiple teeth.
  • Indications of gum disease, such as discolouration, bleeding, or foul odour.

Treatment Plans

Conducted by either a dentist or an oral surgeon, a tooth extraction procedure is commonly completed in a single office visit. The process involves a series of stages, beginning with the assessment of whether tooth removal is the appropriate course of action for you. It then progresses to the actual extraction and concludes with the necessary aftercare:

Finding A Solution

Our dentists will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and engage in a dialogue about potential approaches before proceeding with any tooth extraction. This process is designed to pinpoint the most suitable path for your dental health and overall well-being.

The Extraction

Taking into account the preferences of both the dentist and the patient, a local anesthetic will be utilized to numb the specific areas where the tooth extraction will take place. If necessary, sedation options are also available. Our oral surgeons employ a minimally invasive technique to ensure the gentlest removal of teeth, with your comfort and speedy recovery as our foremost concerns.

Healing Up

Post-procedure, you will be provided with instructions for aftercare, covering:

  • Maintaining oral hygiene while the healing progresses.
  • Foreseeing potential changes.
  • Necessary actions in case of complications.

Feel free to reach out to us if you require an additional appointment to discuss any lingering concerns.

Cost of a Dental Extraction

The cost of dental extractions can vary widely. For those with average insurance, a dental extraction could cost an average of $100 — $200 out of pocket, but without insurance you can expect to pay anywhere from $200 and $400.

When considering the cost of a dental extraction and comparing quotes from different dental practices the location and complexity of the procedure can have an important impact on cost.

Simple Tooth Extraction

A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth. These can be performed by a general dentist, using local anesthesia.

Surgical Tooth Extraction

A surgical extraction is more complex and involves the removal of a tooth that cannot easily be seen or reached, either because it has not fully erupted or it has broken off at the gum line.

No dental practice can provide an accurate quote over the phone as the procedure is complex and depends on many factors. Every case is different so it’s important to speak with a dentist to evaluate your unique situation and provide you with different treatment options to consider.

to schedule an initial consultation & exam.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wisdom teeth extraction is commonly regarded as a customary experience, yet the fact remains that such removal is necessary solely when these teeth become impacted or hinder the alignment of your jaw and other teeth.

With the aid of contemporary dental techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, tooth extractions have become virtually pain-free. The procedure’s speed and ease often catch patients off guard. While minor discomfort may arise, rest assured that we will provide you with post-procedure guidelines to help maintain your comfort during the rapid healing process.

Around an hour after the procedure, you’re welcome to take out the gauze sponges placed in your mouth and enjoy a meal. It’s important to opt for soft foods exclusively within the first 24 hours. Additionally, steer clear of hot foods and abstain from using straws for a few hours.

At your appointment, you’ll receive specific aftercare instructions tailored to your individual needs. In the interim, here are some general guidelines for post-tooth extraction or dental surgery to reduce the risk of complications and expedite your recovery:
Avoid spitting, using a straw, blowing your nose, rinsing your mouth, or smoking during the initial 24 hours following the procedure. Refrain from touching the extraction site with your finger or tongue. Steer clear of consuming hot foods and beverages. Do not take aspirin, as it can hinder blood clotting. Temporarily avoid physical activities and exercise.

Recovery from a basic tooth removal usually spans 7 to 10 days. Conversely, when dealing with more intricate cases like surgical tooth extraction or wisdom tooth removal, the recovery timeline could stretch to about 2 weeks. Regardless of the procedure’s complexity, discomfort during recovery should be minimal.

If no unexpected issues occur, a regular tooth extraction should typically be completed in about 45 minutes or less.

The entire process was very professional. From customer service to consultation, I felt very well taken care of. Dr Habib took out 3 molars so easily, I barely felt anything was happening, even with one very stubborn one which had been growing in an awkward direction for years! Highly recommend. 10/10!

Impressively efficient dentist experience with Dr. Lin. She’s so knowledgeable and performed a thorough examination for my problem. I had a sudden tooth sensitivity and needed to get it checked out. It was so easy to book an appointment the same day and they were able to help me with a non-insurance rate as well. The interior is clean and well-decorated. There are screens on the ceiling in the examination room so you can watch something while laying down too. Easily the best first time experience at a dentist in Toronto.

Fantastic dental office. My partner had an emergency issue and they were able to take us in on a Saturday. They explained everything that was going on in great detail, and didn't try to upsell us at all when it wasn't something major. Prices are also very affordable if you don't have insurance and are paying yourself. And it's not like the place feels cheap compared to other dentists in the area either. They deserve all the good reviews they have.

I was terrified to get my 4 wisdom teeth removed and have been putting it off for years. I’ve contacted many dentists before landing on TDOT dental and Dr Habib is the most empathetic individual I came across. It’s very apparent that he truly cares about his patients and all staff members were really supportive. I felt no pain during the surgery as promised and recovery has been extremely smooth. I’ll be moving all my dental services here and my only regret is that I didn’t come here sooner!
