Perfect Tooth Restoration

Placed over a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy, suffered damage from decay, breakage, staining, or exhibits an abnormal shape, a dental crown acts like a protective “cap.” Carefully crafted to match your natural teeth in both colour and contour, these bespoke crowns are designed to last for more than 15 years. Additionally, they serve multiple purposes, including supporting dental bridges, capping dental implants, and facilitating cosmetic adjustments to enhance overall aesthetics.

What Is The Process of Getting A Crown?

The process of getting a dental crown usually necessitates two visits to the dentist’s office and is conducted by a dental professional.

Starting The Examination

Just like any other dental treatment, it all begins with a thorough dental examination, during which the dentist will examine and clean your teeth to prepare them for a comfortable placement. Should the tooth be fractured or extensively affected by decay, the compromised areas will be carefully removed, allowing the dental crown to effectively safeguard the tooth against further decay.

Sculpting The Tooth

Subsequently, utilizing dental putty, we’ll take an impression of your teeth, essential for fabricating full porcelain crowns tailored to your needs. While waiting for the permanent crowns, a temporary dental crown will be placed on your teeth for interim protection. For those seeking a dental implant to replace a missing tooth, we’ll take an impression of the implant and the surrounding teeth, enabling our laboratory to create a custom crown.

Attaching The Crown

At your follow-up appointment, we will remove the temporary crown and replace it with the permanent crown. The crown will be securely attached using long-lasting dental cement or a discreet screw. To finish the procedure, we’ll carefully polish the crown and make any essential adjustments to ensure your comfort and confidence.

The Cost Of A Crown In Toronto

The cost of a dental crown can vary significantly depending on the individual. Under a typical insurance plan, a single crown generally ranges from $200 to $600 or more. Without insurance, you can expect a ballpark figure of about $800 to $1200 and beyond for a crown, making it a decision that may cause some hesitation despite its benefits in restoring normal appearance and function to your mouth.

Several factors contribute to determining the cost of a dental crown:
  • The type of crown and the material chosen for its construction.
  • The complexity and location of the procedure.
  • The number of crowns needed for your dental restoration.
  • Combining the crown with other dental appliances, such as bridges.
  • Specific supplies and equipment are required for your personalized treatment.

Keep in mind that a precise quote cannot be given over the phone, as your dental needs are as unique as your smile. To fully explore your treatment options and obtain an accurate cost estimate, it’s crucial to consult with a dentist and undergo an oral examination. For patients with dental insurance, we are delighted to provide a quote for you to submit to your insurance provider, allowing you to understand your out-of-pocket expenses before making a final decision.

Your consultation will include an examination of everything from your teeth, gums and soft tissues to the shape and condition of your bite. Generally, we want to see how your whole mouth looks and functions. Before we plan your treatment we want to know everything about the health and aesthetic of your smile, and, most importantly, what you want to achieve so we can help you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Whether a crown is needed after a root canal largely depends on the tooth’s position in the mouth. Teeth situated at the back, like molars and premolars, play a significant role in chewing and frequently benefit from crowns to enhance their durability and safeguard them. Conversely, incisors or canines, which serve different functions and aren’t extensively used for chewing, may not always require crowns.

When comparing a crown to a filling, a significant distinction lies in their durability, particularly concerning teeth with extensive biting surfaces. Fillings on the biting areas of molars may chip or loosen due to the repetitive pressure exerted during chewing or habitual clenching. On the other hand, a crown offers a resilient, unbroken surface spanning from gumline to gumline, specifically engineered to withstand much higher forces over an extended duration.

Within your oral cavity, dental crowns play dual vital roles. First and foremost, they act as complete restorations, allowing you to regain full tooth functionality, enabling pain-free chewing without discomfort or the need to favour one side. Additionally (and not to be underestimated!), crowns are expertly designed to harmonize with your natural teeth. Their colour and contour are precisely matched to your aesthetic, often leading people to forget which tooth is the crowned one.

While not a dental implant that requires surgical placement in the jaw bone, a post serves its purpose well. It is a medical-grade post that can be cemented into a prepared root canal, reinforcing the foundation and core of a dental crown. Dental posts come into play when there is inadequate healthy tooth structure to ensure a reliable crown retention.

The procedure for getting a crown can be comparable to getting a filling, depending on the condition of your tooth. Our primary focus is on ensuring your comfort throughout the process. We take the time to meticulously numb the area and employ suitable freezing techniques during the tooth preparation to minimize any discomfort. Following the procedure, you might experience mild sensitivity or soreness in the gums surrounding the tooth, which should subside shortly. If you have any apprehensions about visiting the dentist, please don’t hesitate to inform us! We are dedicated to easing your worries and making your experience as comfortable as can be.

15 years is the average. 25-30 should be expected with good maintenance.

Maintaining a dental crown is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Consistent brushing and flossing are crucial to ensure the health and cleanliness of both the crown and the supporting gum. Moreover, don’t forget the importance of regular dental cleanings and checkups, as they play a significant role in preserving your oral health.

The entire process was very professional. From customer service to consultation, I felt very well taken care of. Dr Habib took out 3 molars so easily, I barely felt anything was happening, even with one very stubborn one which had been growing in an awkward direction for years! Highly recommend. 10/10!

Impressively efficient dentist experience with Dr. Lin. She’s so knowledgeable and performed a thorough examination for my problem. I had a sudden tooth sensitivity and needed to get it checked out. It was so easy to book an appointment the same day and they were able to help me with a non-insurance rate as well. The interior is clean and well-decorated. There are screens on the ceiling in the examination room so you can watch something while laying down too. Easily the best first time experience at a dentist in Toronto.

Fantastic dental office. My partner had an emergency issue and they were able to take us in on a Saturday. They explained everything that was going on in great detail, and didn't try to upsell us at all when it wasn't something major. Prices are also very affordable if you don't have insurance and are paying yourself. And it's not like the place feels cheap compared to other dentists in the area either. They deserve all the good reviews they have.

I was terrified to get my 4 wisdom teeth removed and have been putting it off for years. I’ve contacted many dentists before landing on TDOT dental and Dr Habib is the most empathetic individual I came across. It’s very apparent that he truly cares about his patients and all staff members were really supportive. I felt no pain during the surgery as promised and recovery has been extremely smooth. I’ll be moving all my dental services here and my only regret is that I didn’t come here sooner!
